Best Gothic Horror Short Films

Gothic horror is about architecture as memory. Old houses are the most common setting because old houses are records of everything that happened inside them, and that record is not always neutral. The genre is obsessed with the weight of the past, with families carrying damage they cannot name, with the way that certain places seem to want certain things from the people inside them.

Short gothic horror is wonderful when it leans into atmosphere over plot. A crumbling estate. A family secret manifesting as physical wrongness. A new arrival who is expected and perhaps has been expected for a very long time. The aesthetic is rich enough that even a brief film can produce a complete and oppressive world.

Why it works in short form

Gothic horror in short form works because the genre's best tool is the establishing shot. You see the house and you know. Something about the architecture communicates the rot before anyone speaks. A short film can spend its first minute doing nothing but showing you the space and trust that the work is already done. Then it only needs to confirm what you already suspect.
